Old Age Survivor and Disability Insurance (OASDI) is the largest social insurance program run by the Social Security Administration. The program provides monthly benefits that are designed to replace lost income due to retirement, disability, or death. About 96 percent of the jobs in the U.S. are covered by OASDI through a payroll tax which currently registers 15.3 percent.
OASDI statistics on RAND New York contain annual averages of the number of persons receiving OASDI benefits and payments by type for persons in the U.S., New York, and all New York counties. The data include only persons whose benefits were payable in December of each year and exclude beneficiaries with earnings in excess of exempt amounts under the Social Security Act.
Some beneficiaries designate a representative payee to who payment is made when it is in the beneficiary's best interest. For example, a beneficiary may designate a child or other adult to receive payment. The data here reflect the geographic location of the payee, not the beneficiary. Also, some numbers are rounded.
